Program Overview

Australia offers multiple pathways for innovative entrepreneurs seeking to establish businesses in the country. The primary route is the Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) Visa โ€“ Entrepreneur Stream (Subclass 188E), designed for entrepreneurs with innovative business ideas backed by third-party funding. For exceptional talent with internationally recognized achievements, the National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) provides a direct pathway to permanent residence.

ย

Unlike some other countries that offer immediate permanent residence, Australiaโ€™s entrepreneur visa operates as a two-stage process: a provisional visa (188E) that leads to permanent residence (888E) after meeting specific business milestones over 2-3 years in Australia.

ย

The Australian startup ecosystem is concentrated in major citiesโ€”Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perthโ€”which serve as innovation hubs particularly strong in technology, fintech, biotech, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. The government actively supports entrepreneurship through various funding programs, R&D tax incentives, and a growing venture capital scene.

Key Program Characteristics:

The program applies to all Australian states and territories, each with their own nomination criteria and priority sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have a registered company before applying?
No, you can apply with a business concept. However, you need legally binding funding agreements and must establish your business in Australia after arrival.
Yes. Your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children under 22 can be included in your application and will receive permanent residence along with you.
Unlike some other countries, Australia’s 888E permanent residence pathway requires meeting specific business success factors. If your business fails, you may not qualify for PR through this pathway, though other visa options may be available.

The 188E visa allows you to work in Australia, but you must maintain active involvement in your complying entrepreneur activity. Working for another company while neglecting your own business could jeopardize your nomination status.

There’s no specific personal investment requirement, but you need to demonstrate sufficient settlement funds (amount varies by state) and the ability to support yourself while establishing your business.
Yes. You must demonstrate Competent English (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent in all components). Higher English scores may strengthen state nomination applications.
Yes. Most applicants apply from outside Australia. You can also apply if you’re already in Australia on a valid substantive visa or bridging visa A, B, or C.
Most innovative industries are eligible, but your activity must NOT relate to residential real estate, labor hire, or purchasing an existing enterprise or franchise.
The 188E visa is valid for up to 4 years and 3 months. After meeting requirements (minimum 3 years on visa, 2 years residence, business success factors), you can apply for the 888E permanent residence visa.
The Department of Home Affairs doesn’t publish specific approval rates for the 188E stream. Success depends heavily on the quality of your business concept, funding arrangements, and state nomination support.
Choose based on where your business concept best fits with state priorities, where your target market is located, and where you have existing connections or support networks. Each state has different nomination criteria and processing times.
Your 188E visa requires you to maintain ties with your nominating state/territory. Moving to another state may affect your nomination status and ability to apply for the 888E visa. If circumstances require relocation, you should discuss with both states’ nomination authorities.
